The attorneys had two contracts with the Cherokee Nation, one from 1948 and another from 1958, both approved by the Commissioner of Indian Affairs. The contracts stipulated that the attorneys' compensation would be contingent on a recovery for the Cherokee Nation and not to exceed 10% of the amount recovered.
