Cherokee Chief W. W. Keeler resolved a conflict between tribal officials and the Cherokee National Historical Society, firing and then rehiring Deputy Chief Rev. Sam Hider. The society owed money to the tribe and a lawsuit was authorized by Hider. The situation is part of a series of crises during Keeler's tenure, as he is not seeking re-election. The Historical Society owes money to the tribe and is being investigated for alleged fraud.
