Mr. and Mrs. Kirkwood wrote a letter to Helen Gahagan Douglas regarding a newspaper clipping stating that enlisted men with 24 months of active service in the Pacific theater would be sent back to the United States for reassignment. Douglas clarified that the men with 24 months of service are actually eligible for discharge and not reassignment.
