Scope and Contents
Houston C. Benge wrote a letter to Congressman Page Belcher suggesting that American Indians be referred to as "Americans" to eliminate discrimination. He cited an incident of discrimination against an Indian family in Chicago as an example. Benge believed that changing the name would add prestige to their status and promote progress. He asked Belcher to consider his suggestion and investigate its feasibility, offering to drop the matter if Belcher felt it had no merit.
