Verneil English Collection
Collection
Identifier: CAC-PP-110
The Verneil English collection consists of a variety of materials submitted by English and Kathy Fraser. English collected the greater part of these items as Carl Albert’s executive assistant. The collection includes internal memos, invitations to prominent events on Capitol Hill, legislative reference material, and various personal materials related to Carl Albert and English. One of the strongest series is the Queen’s Visit and Luncheon, which contains a large amount of information about Queen Elizabeth's visit to the United States in celebration of the Bicentennial and all of the behind-the-scenes organization required to facilitate those events. The materials range in date and topic but help to capture how a congressional leadership office functioned in the 1960s-1970s.

Biographical Information:
Verneil English served as Carl Albert's secretary and assistant for over twenty-five years. English was the only individual who worked continuously with Albert during his time as Congressman, Majority Whip, Majority leader, and Speaker of the House. She started as a part-time secretary and rose to become one of the highest paid staff officers on the Hill during Albert's tenure. She performed many roles for Albert as his executive assistant including stenographer, caseworker, speechwriter, and administrator. Perhaps most notably, English handled all the arrangements on behalf of Speaker Albert for Queen Elizabeth's visit to the United States for the celebration of the Bicentennial.
Arrangement of Materials:
Arranged thematically into six series: 1) Queen's Visit and Luncheon 2) Office Organization and Policies 3) Invitations, Programs, and Ceremonies 4) Congressional 5) Speeches/Statements 6) General. The majority of the materials were loose in a box and thus were sorted into series and then foldered. Preexisting folders were named and sorted into series.
