Telstar satellite which serves as a microwave relay in space to transmit tests of telephone conversations, data and television programs across oceans. The satellite is covered by 3600 solar cells which obtain energy from the sun. At the top, a helical Antenna transmits information about the condition of the satellite for scientific purposes. The helical antenna is also used to receive commands to turn on or off the satellite transmission circuits. Girdling the center of the satellite are two broad band antennas, the upper one receiving at 6390 megacycles, the lower used for transmitting at 4170 megacycles. June 1962 A.T. - T. photo.
