"Jobs, Not Welfare" - Kennedy, Robert Francis - [Democratic]
"SUMMARY: Kennedy talking about jobs and welfare to a group of young people in a studio. Need jobs with a future; need welfare reform; jobs instead of welfare. SUBJECTS: welfare; jobs; reform COMMUNICATION TYPE: Positive Issue POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE: Paid for by the Oregon for Kennedy Committee PROGRAM TYPE: PROGRAM TYPE: Commercial ELECTION YEAR: 1968 STATE: National Ad OFFICE: United States President Offices and Issue Campaigns PARTY: Democratic 10809 13 100 FORMAT (analog): 2"" GENDER (legacy): Male TRANSCRIPTION: (voice of announcer) Senator Kennedy talks about jobs and welfare. (voice of Senator Kennedy) At this point I think it’s got to clear that they’re not dead end jobs. It means jobs that are going to lead to something and where there are promotions and there is ability to continue up the scale. The welfare system does nothing. It gives somebody a dole, it’s a payoff, you stay quite and we will give you a payoff every week. I think we should get away from the welfare system. Obviously some welfare is going to be necessary either for children or the blind or the disabled but we need to get away from the welfare system and have a job system instead of that. I think that what we did is except the philosophy of the 1930s and feel that that’s acceptable in the late 1960s and 1970s and in my judgment is that it is not. It bankrupts the state, it bankrupts the community and it will bankrupt the country. (voice of announcer) Oregon can help choose the next President of the United States. On May 28th vote for Robert Kennedy (words on screen) Paid for by the Oregon for Kennedy Committee"
