Improving Tricycle Safety: A Study and Proposed Regulations, 1972-12-20

 Item — Box: 22, Folder: 34
Identifier: CAC_CC_109_4_22_34_0002
A preliminary study on the safety of tricycles has been completed by Calspan Corporation, finding that conventional tricycles can be unstable and cause injuries to child riders, especially when a rider is standing on the rear platform. The study identified various design features contributing to instability and recommended a stable tricycle design with low seat and wide track rear wheels. The Bureau of Product Safety is drafting mandatory design and performance regulations for tricycles, with proposed regulations expected to be published within three months. FDA is proposing a contract for a study to redesign tricycles and mini-bikes for improved safety for children, as a significant number of children are injured in accidents involving these vehicles. The study will provide valuable technical information on design features to reduce the risk of injury.
