Mrs. Matt Elder wrote to Congressman James R. Jones expressing her concerns about the need to reduce federal spending and balance the budget. She suggested cutting foreign aid and eliminating wasteful spending in domestic programs. Congressman Jones acknowledged her letter and assured her that her comments would be helpful in stabilizing the economy. In a separate letter, Mrs. Elder criticized the federal budget, particularly the education budget and the lack of specific ways proposed to cut spending. She pointed out several instances of wasteful spending and duplication in government programs. Sylvia Porter's article also highlighted unnecessary expenditures in the federal budget. President Ford proposed cutbacks in popular programs like impact aid to reduce federal spending. Overall, there is a consensus on the need to address wasteful spending and balance the federal budget.
