Gubernatorial candidate Denzil Garrison criticized the state Democratic leadership for being out of touch with the thinking of Oklahomans and accused them of being controlled by the McGovern element. He also criticized Senator Ted Kennedy for his comments on the Watergate scandal and suggested releasing the transcript of the Chappaquiddick incident. Garrison believed Kennedy's visit to Oklahoma was a mistake and not reflective of the state's views. He thanked Kennedy for inadvertently helping the Republican party and criticized the Democrat fundraising event featuring Kennedy.
