Correspondence Between Dr. James E. Winslow and Congressman James R. Jones on Health Care Issues in America, 1974-07-26
Dr. Winslow Jr. wrote a letter to Congressman James R. Jones offering his thoughts on national health insurance, PSRO's, Hill-Burton, physicians' geographical distribution, and maintaining a high level of health care and research. Dr. Winslow expressed concerns about the over-regulation of health care and the inefficiencies in government spending, particularly in the Medicare program. He suggested a program that would provide federally subsidized health insurance administered by the private insurance industry for those who cannot afford full coverage. Dr. Winslow also emphasized the importance of improving the distribution of physicians and allied personnel to ensure better access to medical care, especially in rural areas. He objected to the PSRO Program, fearing it would lead to a decrease in the quality of medical care by imposing excessive controls on the practice of medicine.
